UNION’S NEW TACTICS.

AWARD CONDITIONS WANTED.

It is reported that the Committee of Management ’ of the. Federated Seamen s Union, has. aecrcled to. lippiy roc registration as a trade union unuer tne industrial lawn of every State. It is said that the move is oeing taken with the object pt thwarting any attempt on tne . part of a rival organisation to secure registration in the Federal Arbitration Court. ' Since the de-regi stratum of the seamen’s Union, officials of the Union have been anxious to secure some method of safeguarding seamen, at present employed under, award, conditions. \Vith this, object in view, action was taken by. the’ Unio.Ji immediately after, the new articles . foi the steamer Monaro’s qrew veie signed at Melbourne. Messrs Walsh and O'Neill of the Victorian branch of' the Union, presented the company with, a request it should include- hi the articles, a clause whereby it would be practicallv bound to .conform with the wages and conditions, provided m the cancelled award>Th« company refused to agree to the insertion of this clause, ami the Monaro is held up. .Representatives -of the shipping companies state .that the Seamen’s Union have no reason to suppose that shipowners intend fo alter the conditions re wages ruling it present. . Further efforts by the -management of the Commonwealth Line of Ships to secure crown for the steamers Dilga and Eromanga by means ’of advertising have-p.rnved-abortive. t . .
