-- — COMMITTEE MEETING. The Grey Main School Committee met last evening : Prerent: Messrs J. Tennent (chairman), J. Weaver, R. J. Williams, R. Barrowman, and JLamberton (secretary). The meeting was in place of that called for I riday last, which lapsed for want of a quorum. In the absence of the Rector (Mr H. 11. Allison) through illness, Mr 0. Williams reported that there are at present on the roll 292. boys and 283 girls, the average attendance for the past four weeks being, boys 277.2, girls 267.5- The Board had been notified of Mr Allison’s illness, and a medical certificate forwarded. Miss Duncan will commence relieving duty on Monday next, during Mr Allison’s absence. A list of pupils who made the possible number of attendances during 1924 was supplied. The Committee’s idea of 'giving prizes for attendance met with the warmest approval of the staff, wrote Mr Williams. Personally, he would prefer to see prizes given for attendance rather than for merit, as the

latter usually were won by abnormally brilliant children with comparatively little effort, while those who had perhaps worked harder were unrewarded. The internal work of the school was progressing as favourably as could be expected with the frequent changes in the staff Miss Moore is still absent on sick leave, and Miss Porter is relieving in the infant'Department. The various sports of the school are receiving attention, the A team winning the recent tug-of-war contest at the Town Hall. Seven teams were entered in the seven-a-side tourney on the King’s Birthday, the B team being defeated in the final by Cobden. Two teams journeved to Runanga to play overhead ball games. A team of boys also competed in the relay race at Greymouth for the “Evening Star” Shield. Various repairs had been effected at the school, and minor repairs were required in most of the class rooms. A list of requirements was supplied. A foundation was required for the school war trophy. This was an eyesore in its present position and “would be better sent to the Foundry.” It was recommended that all the school gates and the gymnasium be locked every night. Reporting on the Blaketown side school, Miss M. A. Dunn stated that the roll number was 95. The average attendance during May was 88, and the average this week 93.5. Various repairs were needed at the school. The Dental Officer (Miss J. S. Bean) reported that during May 128 children had been treated. The total number of operations was 287. It was resolved to send a letter to the Rector, Mr 11. H. Allison, expressing the hope that he would make a good and quick recovery. The appointment of Miss Minnie Lilburn as assistant teacher at the Main School was confirmed. The following repairs were authorised at BJaketown School: To Gymnasium, windows and door, school table, school grounds, and latrines. Firewood was urgently needed at Blaketown for kindling. Any boxes or waste timber that the shops can spare will be thankfully received. It was decided to get 4 Mr G. Bignell. the Board’s foreman, to attend to small repairs needed at the Main School. The visiting Committee reported having visited both schools (Main and Blaketown) and found everything running smoothly. The repairs asked for were all required.
