Seebeck, has accepted a position indhe Christchurch Telephone Exchange, and is expected to take up her duties in abofjt a fortnight. Last Sunday afternoon,) Mr Joseph Manzoni, of Chllaghans, 'met with <i severe accident, which necessitated liis removal to the Greymouth Hospital. He was riding a horse, and when in tho vicinity O; Callaghan’s Track’, the anilnal stumbled and fell, throwing its rider on his. head, and •, rendering him unconscious. In this condition he, remained, until found by a passer-by, who immediately, sought help in Waimea. . However, before this arrived, Mr Berganini, who was motoring through to Greymouth, arrived on the scene, when it. was decided .to take; Mr Manzoni to. the Grey Hospital. Latest reports are, that although st. in a dazed condition, the patient shows . slight improvement. . ' / Last Monday evening a car' on '.its way to Grey mouth got off the road.' in close -proximity to the Taiiamakau railway bridge. The cause \of the accident was the bursting of a front tyre, which had the effect of the driver temporarily losing control, and the car skidded over the bank. The occupants escaped unhurt and the car sustained no 'damage. _ ’ . , Mr and Mrs Acour.t,- of Wellington, .. are on a visit)to Kumara. The Committee of' the Kumara Memorial Hall have just made an addition' to the building in the shape of a ladies’ dressing room, which should prove a great convenience to patrons of, the Hall. ' \ , A few days ago there was on view at Mr John Stewart’s shop a mammoth swede turnip, which turned the scale at 351bs. This turnip was grown by Mr J. Perring,, on pakihi- land, on, the Beach road, and is an illustration of what the land -will produce with' 'judicious draining and the right kind of fertiliser. The turnip was a fair , sample taken from a plot of them any one of which it is said would weigh upwards of 201bs. , The vegetable when cut, Was. found to be thoroughly 1 sound, and equal to anything grown in _ the district. On the adjoining piece of ground to where the turnip was grown was a fine crop of parsnips, some of which were over 71bs in weight. So much for what can bb’ grown on land hitherto /thought to be worthless, and. of which the West Coast has quite a lot. Mr Perring is to be commended on his perseverence in endeavouring to farm land of this quality, and is deserving of every consideration at the hands of the Agricultural Department in the task he has set himself. During the last couple of days, Die Public Works Department have had two five ton lorries engaged distributing gravel' on the Beach road.
