Orders for Marconi lifeboat wireless sets of the latest pattern, numbering nearly 90 installations, have recently been .received by the Marconi Internationa] Marine Communication ComE (Limited). Succeeding types ol sat equipment produced' by the •’ Marconi Company during a number of years provide interesting comparisons and, indicate very clearly the advance which has been made in wireless science. The earliest transmitter was a fixed spark gap, the power for .which was obtained'from a handdriven generator, and the receiver was a magnetic detector. Then followed a set having a rotary spark transmitter and a crystal 1 receiver; and after that a quenched spark gap, still with a crystal receiver. In the latest Marconi set a valve receiver has been introduced with a kilowatt quenched spark transmitter. The transmitter is operated by power supplied by a specially designed petrol engine or alternatively from a battery of accumulators, and has a range of from 50 to 60 miles, when working to a crystal receiver. The receiver uses dull emitter valves, and has a range of reception of not less than 80 miles, varying with the power of the transmitter from which it is receiving. A directional aerial used in conjunction with the boat’s main aerial enables the bearing of neighbouring ships to be determined. The receiver has been designed for use as an all-round receiver as well as a direction, finder. The set can be supplied, if required, without the direction finding equipment.
