The annual meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board was more important than usual, owing to the announcement that the Board had approved the expenditure of a large sum for repairs and renovations at the South Tip. Even to the non-expert eye it has been clear that such attention was becoming urgently necessary, and those the Board members represent will have little desire to criticise the Board’s decision. The South Tip improvements are, of course, only part of the work to be carried out, the opposite Tip, also, being in a far from satisfactory state.

Howeybr, the South side is the more important, and those eager for port ' improvements must be content with one job at a time. The re-election of Mr. J.'Steer to the. cHairmansiiii) will be as unopposed’ outside the "Board room as it was, among members, as he has. long since proved his capacity. He had a delicate task in being frank about the chairman’s Jbribrariuin, : and it would be news to most' people that such recognition, was" not already practised. The. sum voted, £lOO. annually, is not large, indeed not much more than nominal compared with the time and services demanded from the holcjer Of’such a position, and it is but right, that outgoings should be recompensed. The Harbour Board is admittedly doing good Work, and partly to capable guidance is now in a satisfactory financial position. For' this, the district should be grateful, and presuiriably it is, seeing that few complaints arise.. The only two that seem to.be general is, firstly, against the nomination system which prevents the public having -any voice in the selection Of members, and secondly, the tendency of the Board to do so much of its work in committee. No suggestion, of course, is. made that such lack of publicity is detrimental to public interests, but human nature being what it is, it 16 understandable why the public wish to know more of what is being done on i their Behalf. .. .
