BULLER NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). WESTPORT, Al ay 14. The news that the Stockton coal mining dispute was settled was received with relief by the miners and people generally in th.s district. Whether work could not have gone on all the time and the matter in dispute referred to the local disputes committee to settle in the meantime, is a question that has arisen frequently in the minds of those directly and indirectly concerned by such industrial holds up. Writing to his brother in Westport in acknowledgment of a copy of a local newspaper containing a report of Air T. Milner’s address on Robbie Burns, given Wore the Buller Caledonian Society, Sir Robert Blair, who recently retired from the position of Director of Schools under the London County Council, says : “I read your friend’s speech with pleasure. Well thought out. Buller Caledon ion Society must be a happy family.’’ Mr Kearns has resigned from Mr R. Patterson’s employ to take over the Rendezvous Tea Rooms in AVestport from Air Harold Ferguson, who, with his wife and family, is understood to be leaving shortly for Napier. ,With the nomination of R (“Snowy”) Griffiths, R. Tunnicliffe, V. Goodall, and A. Lockey on the New Zealand Rugby team to visit Australia, no exception can be taken as all are strenuous players of outstanding ability. C. Goodall, a brother of Vernon, now playing with Berhampore team, Wellington, has been nominated by Wellington Rugby Union as one of its representatives. Cyril played with Buller representative team last year, and is said to be showing very good form this year. His many Buller friends will be pleased should he get a place in the touring team. Air Eddy Sherlock, on the eve ol his departure for Taihope on promotion in the P. and T. Office, was presented by the C.P.M. and staff with a handsome suit case. Many kind things were said about Eddy, who is a popular lad, a good footballer and hockey player, a reliable public servant, and, in social functions, a pleasant entertainer. Air and Airs ,J. Morgan have returned from an extended trip io the North Island. Airs Munro, of Dunedin, is visiting relatives at Millerton. Air A. J. Green, who successfully competed at the N.Z. Bisley, at whichhe collected a fairly substantial sum in prize money, has returned to Westport. The Alisses Cooke, of Nelson, who have been spending a holiday at Westport as the guests of Airs J. Rowell, leave on their return to Nelson to--4 ay.
