SPORTING

o ———■ RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) There will be racing to-morrow at, North Canterbury, Riverton and Egmont (second day). Hungry Hill has been taken south by W. S. Lloyd, and will join Kilbarry at Wingatui. The Hokitika-owned filly Some Abbey has joined R. C. Keeper’s string at Orari. Jubilant is bowling along freely in her work at Riccarton, and has apparently fully recovered from the mishap which prevented her taking her place in the New Zealand St. Leger field. She will be a starter at North Canterbury to-morrow. Mr. G. Gerard, whose horses have been trained by J. B. Pearson for some time past, has engaged G- J. Pine to act as his private trainer. He has purchased a six acre property near the, Riccarton Racecourse, with a range of ten boxes. Pine will have a team of seven horses to start on, including Cyrene and Victory Bond. R. J. Mason declares that he has no intention of retiring from training. The fact that Gloaming has been blistered is evidence that Mason has hopes of the champion standing another preparation. Gloaming’s joints filled after the racing on the hard tracks at the ’ recent Hawke’s Bay meeting, so Mason has eased him in his work. Though Hector Gray thinks Gloaming was doing just about his best to beat The Hawk, he is a great admirer of the old horse after last Saturday s race. « He says the thing which strack him' most as the two horses raced, side by side was the terrific stride of Gloaming. “His forelegs seemed to shoot out a wonderful distance in front of him,” he said, ‘ and, well as The Hawk was going, he appeared to be merely plodding. The Hawk was taking about three strides to Gloaming’s two.” Fool’s Paradise was suffering from bad feet at Hastings, and in the Cup was unable to do himself justice. He was top sore to run the second day, and he has returned to Trentham instead of doing the Wanganui and Auckland trip. The first race at the North Canterbury meeting to-morrow will start at 12-15 p.m. ■ The locally-owned horses, Prince Charleroi and Lord Ashlea will be rac? ed at North Canterbury, but Lord Leslie has been brought hpme. The latter has been a costly proposition to his new owner, and was well-dropped by Mr. A. Grogan for £l5O, Sottano was very unlucky to be beaten in the Longlands Welter on the first day at Hastings. He was in trouble all the way, and a final check at the turn no doubt cost him the race. There is not much doubt, however, that his early bad position was in some measure due to his own objection to lining up at the barrier. —North Canterbury Races. — Following are the acceptances, including penalties, for the North Canterbury races: — ' Oxford Highweight Handicap of 110 sovs. ; 1 mile. —Tenterfield 10.12, Kukume, Castellan 10.9, Petunia 10.8, All Gold, Bonomel, Goldspinner 10.4, Kilbirnie 10.0, Lord Ashlea, Rigel, North Inch 9.7, Horatius 9.0. Jubilant and Goosestep were associated over seven furlongs. ‘Jubilant drew away in the last bit, finishing up a comfortable winner in 1.32, which was a useful gallop. Prompter got a break on Miss Minerva at the start of half a mile fcprint, but they were together at the end of two furlongs, completing their task in 51 3-ssecs. It was a useful effort on the part of Miss Minerva. Tenterfield, Castellan and Kukume jumped off at the six furlong post.
