RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

SATURDAY’S WORK.

(Special to “Star ”)

CHRISTCHURCH, September 13.

A brisk nor’wester was in evidence this morning. It stopped the horses

as they raced along the back of the course, but assisted them in the run home. All the fast work was done on the No. 6 grass track. Tarleton and Te Anau Lad commenced proceedings by running seven furlongs in 1.39 3-5. Chickwheat was on the move, while Kukuine and Grim Joke were standing, in a spin over seven furlongs. Chickwheat finished a length and ahalf in front of Kukume, with Grim Joke four lengths away, the time being 1.32.

Cerberus covered seven furlongs in

1.32 3 5. Prince Ferouz and Count Cavour were companions over seven furlongs, with the latter slightly the better in 1.31.

Jubilant was slightly better than Gay Queen over six furlongs in 1.17. Deucalion, with a fair weight up. galloped nine furlongs in 2.2, but could eaasily have improved on it. Owlscombe and Firestick finished on terms after leaving six furlongs behind in 117 2-5, the former pleasing most.

Petunia sprinted five furlongs in 1.4 2-5.

Starmist covered a mile in J. 46, the last seven furlongs taking 1.34. Dame Straitlace galloped six furlongs in 1.17, going well. Moorland, after cantering once round on the plough, ran five furlongs on the grass in 1.7. Fres>o, ridden by H. Burns, covered four furlongs in 54secs. Limelight jumped away from the top of the straight, and went about a mile and a-quarter, the last nine furlongs taking 1.59 2-5. She finished well.

Radiac went evenly all the. way, while galloping a mile in 1.48 4-5. Escarpment and Rich Pride were on terms at the close of seven furlongs, cut out in 1.29 3-5, both going well.

CHELMSFORD STAKES. HEROIC DEFEATS GLOAMING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, September-14. The Chelmsford Stakes was run at Randwick yesterday in glorious weather, the going being good. The attendance was estimated at 50,000. Gloaming’s presence in the Chelmsford Stakes, both from sentimental reasons and the hope of seeing him again perform on the tracks, provided a special attraction. The old horse had a great reception, crowds visiting his stall, and cheering heartily as he -went out to fulfil his engagement. Ridden by the New Zealander. Young, and always holding a good position, Gloaming took charge after entering the straight and at the distance was clear from Ballymena, on whom Con Reid had the mount. Gloaming’s victory was then loudly proclaimed, but this proved premature. Ashley Reed brought Heroic along with a well-timed run, and he beat the old champion comfortably by a little over a length. Ballymena ran well, and was always prominent, being just beaten out of third place. Director finished fifth. Following is the result of the Chelmsford Stakes, 9 furlongs : — Heroic (8.2) A. Reed ... ... 1 Gloaming (9.8) G. Young ... 2 Wallace Mortlake (7.12) 3 There were thirteen' starters. The field got away from an excellent start, and Ballymena and Wallace Mortlake took command, with Gloaming lying fourth. The positions were practically unaltered until they reached the turn, where Gloaming moved up. Gloaming, Ballymena and Golden Voice entered the straight on terms, and two' furlongs from home Gloaming was leading. Heroic, who came very fast, threw out a challenge, and, after a short tussle, won by a length and a quarter, Wallace Mortlake beating Ballymena by two lengths for third place. Time 1.504 —A record. A number of New Zealanders started in the other events, but all failed to secure places.

YOUTH PREVAILS.

SYDNEY, September 14.

The Sydney Sunday papers’ comment on the Chelmsford Stakes practically amounts to a declaration that youth must be served. While giving full credit for his great effort, and admitting Mr. Mason’s contention that he required a bit more tuning up, they point out that Gloaming’s age was an undoubted handicap against the brilliant Victorian three-year-old colt, Heroic. The worst fault of Heroic is his fractiousness and difficulty" to control, but yesterday, under the skilful guidance of Ashley Reed, he acted most kindly. In this respect, the luck was against Gloaming.

The “Telegraph” says: Whether Gloaming has had his day or not, it is difficult to say with any degree of certainty. It was not like the Gloaming of old to be beaten so comfortably after having been a pace-maker into the straight, but it was only natural if age is beginning to tell. Perhaps it may be that he will prove at his next start that it was the need of a race that told against him, and it is significant to note, that his trainer, one of the greatest of all trainers, was of the opinion both before and after the Chelmsford, that another week or fortnight’s work would have benefitted Gloaming considerably. The “Tdlegraph” declares that the better horse on the day won. The “Herald” says: Youth prevailed over the last bit. YEARLING SALES. LONDON, Sept.- 14. At the Doncaster yearling sales, the top price realised was for a filly, 6169 guineas. The total of the sales was 322,836 guineas, which is forty-nine thousand in excels of any previous sale.
