FIRE AT KOKIRI

DOG SAVES MAN’S LIFE.

. . Between 1 and'2 o’clock this morning a small five-roomed cottage at Kokiri, occupied by Mr. Gibbs, who is wellk nown in the district, was burnt to the- ground. - i , . •n. When Mt. Gibbs returned last night, between 10-and 10.30 o’clock, e 'L el /' r ’’ ■. thing was safe. He was ‘awakened by his dog, which was sleeping by ms bedside, pawing him and whining. He had barely time to throw a few clothes out of the window, and make a hasty 'exit, before the fire reached where he i had lam. ' ' Mr. Gibbs lost about £5 in notes. There was a small insurance on the house and furniture, and his loss will Id© heavy. •»• * * Had it not been for the dog, Mr. Gibbs would probably have lost his life, as" he states that he wa's sleeping very soundly, when the dog awoke him. He-was the only occupant of the house, ' except the'dog.-

FIRE AT FOUNDRY.

' HAMILTON, September 15. A fire at J. . J. Niven and Co.’s foundry caused damage amounting to about £l5OO. The loss is covered by insurance. Thd-brigade made a wonderful'save, as the fire had a good hold when discovered. HOUSE DESTROYED. BLENHEIM; September 15. A six-roomed dwelling, owned and occupied by W., Broadbent, at Springlands, vms completely destroyed by fire last evening. Practically nothing was. saved. The insurances on the building were £9OO (Phoenix), furniture £350 _(New. Zealand). An adjacent house caught fire, but the brigade effected .a good save.
