The Kaitoa arrived this morning from Wellington, Nelson and Westport with general cargo. After discharge she loads coal for Picton, sailing to-night. The Waimea left Onehunga yesterday for Nelson and Coast with general cargo. The Alexander sailed yesterday,,, for New Plymouth with a cargo of coal. The Regulus is due to-morrow from Wanganui. She loads a part load of coal and proceeds to Westport to complete loading for Nelson. The Titoki left Wellington yesterday for Nelson and Coast with general cargo. After discharge she loads coal for Wellington. The Tees leaves Wellington to-night for Greymouth with general cargo. The Kaiapoi is expected to sail on Monday with timber for Melbourne. The Waipori arrived this morning from Wellington via New Plymouth. She is loading.a part cargo of coal for Napier and Tauranga and completes at Westport. She sails to-night. The Kittawa is expected from Westport to-night to load coal and timber for Wellington. \ The Kakapo was scheduled to sail from Timaru last night for Greymouth. She takes a part load of coal for Bluff on arrival and completes at Westport for Oamaru and Dunedin. ■ The Ngatoro is expected from Wellington to-morrow night to load coal and timber for Miramar. Mr F. W. Gibson has been appointed second officer of the Waipori, relieving Mr E. J. de Carteret, who is on holiday. Mr J. R. Harper has rejoined the Wingatui as chief officer. Mr D. P. Sinclair, who has been acting-chief reverts, and Mr F. A. Wilson awaits instructions. Mr J. E. Warwick has been appointed chief officer of the Whangapb in place of Mr P. H. King, who has been appointed to the Kaiwarra in a similar capacity. Mr R. M. Kane, of the Kaiwarra, has been granted sick leave. The Union Company recently purchased a coastail trader of 2300 tons which has been called the Kairanga. The White Star steamer Megantic sailed recently from Liverpool icr Canada after conversion- into what has become known as ''cabin”'•vessel. This means that the distinction hitherto existing as between first and second class has been abolished, that all passengers other than those in the third class will be on the same level of accommodation, and that the accommodation for steerage or third class has- been materially improved. The Megantic is 14,878 tons, has a speed of about knots, and has accommodation for over 600 cabin passengers and for about 1000 passengers in the third class.. Tn accordance with the owners' practice, the latest type of Sperry compass has been installed in the Cunard liner Berengaria. The equipment consists of a master compass—which is in a small compartment in the wheelhouse—four repeaters, and a 30-day course recorder —all of which are situated on the bridge. Another repeater has been installed in the wireless-room, and operates in conjunction ’ with the Marconi direction finder. The equipment also includes the latest auxiliary to the gyro compass—the Sperry gyro pilot; the Berengaria has, therefore, the distinction to be the largest British ship to be steered automatically.
