LAWYER THREATENED

POLICE COURT SENSATION. (Special to “Star.”) CIJRISTCHU RCII, I )ecember 7. At the Magistrate’s Court, Ashburton, to-day, before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., the wife of Alfred E. Candy proceeded against him claiming £43 10s arrears on a maintenance order. Candy said that he had travelled 140 miles to defend the case, which should never have come on. There always had been and there was still, a home for Mrs Candy. Later, lie said he had no intention of supporting a, divorced woman. They had been divorced six months. The case had proceeded a little further when Candy turned to Mr A. North, counsel for the complainant, and accused him of being the cause of all the trouble and of breaking up his home. It’s a good job you’re a cripple or I’d put you in your place,” said Candy to North. The Bench took a serious view of defendant’s attitude and ordered a constable to remove the man from the box. He was ordered to apologise to the Court and to Mr North, which he did and the case proceeded, but not unit I Mr Mosley had described Candy as an “insulting vagabond.” Mr Mosley said that an allowance had to be made for men from the backblocks, some of whom did not know how to conduct themselves. Candy was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended for one month and thereafter on condition that he pay £1 a week.
