REEFTON, Nov. 9. Miss M. Ellis, who left here about two years ago for Australia, and who for some time past has been in Wellington, returned last evening on a visit to her mother and sisters. Miss Kate Osborne, who has been a patient at the Otaki Saratorium, arrived in Reefton last evening. Her brother, Mr. G. Osborne, accompanied her from Otaki. Mr. Eric Meibom had a narrow escape from a fatal accident yesterday morning. He was driving a dray near the County Quarry on the Black’s Point road when the CoCunty tractor frightened the horse which shied. Trying to restrain the animal, Meibom was thrown out of the dray on to the road and a wheel went over his foot mangling it severely, and it is thought breaking a small bone. Mr. R. Wills, who recently underwent a serious operation is progressing fvaourably. On the visit of the Minister of Publie Works to Reefton on Saturday, the inequality of the railway freights will be put before him. Coal owners in Reefton cannot understand why coal can be railed from Wairu to Christchurch, a distance of 440 miles, for 18/8, while coal freight from Reefton to Christchurch, 1741 miles 18/11 or threepence more over a jouinej 235 J miles less. days nas Deen simpiy ~ warm as midsummer. The growth in the gardens is wonderful and garden produce is growing fast. In anticipation of the Show in March next, a much greater variety of flowers and vegetables are being grown than is usually the case.
