WESTPORT NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) The Buller County Council held a lengthy meeting yesterday, commencing'atlO a.m. and finishing at 4 p.m. There was a full attendance.. Some lime was taken in receiving deputations on various questions. The first were the representatives of the_ local section of the Westland Exhibition Committee, who were asking tor financial assistance. Alessrs J. Bradley and E. 11. Fox put in strong claims for Buller Court and general exhibits from tlie district. 'l’he resources of the district, which contain untold we'ilth must be given every publicity and the delegation assured the Council any monies advanced would be well spent for the welfare of the district. The Council were sympathetic and donated £5O. Air. Young, Borough Engineer, and Alessrs Bryan and Shaw, members of the Borough Council then asked for assistance in completing Stafford St., and forming the short section of Domett St.. lying between Brougham and Wakefield Streets. The former would cost about £6O and the latter £ and all they asked was that the County Council bear half of the expense. While members recognised that the request was reasonable it was regretted owing to the lack of funds the Council could not commit itself at tile present juncture.

Members of the newly-formed Cape Foulwiml Progress League deputat ionised the Council re the vesting of the Recreat’on Ground under their control, on lines as detailed in the report of Saturday’s meeting as already reported in Ibis column. Various phases of the position were, advanced and debated at length and finally it was decided by a six to throe majority that the Council assume control of the grounds, in question. The. next move in th's game will be the appointment of a Domain Board at the Cape to put the area, in order and attend to its future welfare, '['he B.C.C. made it pretty plain they had no money to spend on the project. Judging by the decision of a. majority of County Councillors the reports of the County Clerk ami Engineer are m>l for the public to peruse. Al to-day’s meeting, a. request, from the Press table, after the repor'- were dealt with and adopted,' that they be handed over for publication met with sonm opposition and opin-d up a discussion. While some members favoured full pub'icity of the reports, the majority rul'd otherwise, the mam argument, put forward being it was not. the usual custom to have these reports published.
