RIFLE SHOOTING
MAWHERAITI DEFENCE CLUB. The newly-formed Mawheraiti Defence Rille Club held the opening shoot on Sunday last and favoured with fine -weather the members had a very enjoyable day. People were present from all parts of the district and showed the keen interest that is being taken in the Club. Mr. J. Byrne (the local representative on the County Council) congratulated the inembers on their enterprise in forming the Club and wished them every success. Short speeches were, also delivered by Messrs G. B. Mclnroe (Ikamatua), and E. Hubbard (Reefton Rifle Club). Mr. Byrne called upon Mrs. Watt Senr., to fire the first shot, and declared the range open. A ten round sweepstake match at 200 and 300 yards w r as fired, twentyfive members competing and although the shooting was not biilliant, it must be considered very lair for men on a new range and using strange rifles. The following were the leading scores. (Possible 40): .1. Waters 35, R. Merrick 32, G. Walters 32, A. Palmer 30, M. McGeady 29, G. Byrne 29, C. Fanselow 28, J. Watt 28, A. Marks 28, T. Cook 27, L. Pedrazzi 2G, I*. Murray 2G, A. Richards 25. A letter was received from the I'resident ami Secretary of. the Grey Rifle Club regretting that they were unable to bo present on Ihe opening (lay, but were Looking forward Io coming to some of the matches in the near future. The Club has received some valuiblo trophies, and these will lie shot for as soon as the members have dime enough shooting to give the handicappers something definite to work on.
