Kirkwood led two up at the ninth hole, which was reached in 38, to Seymour’s 40, but the latter outplayed Kirkwood homewards, especially on the greens, taking only 33 to Kirkwood’s 37. Seymour putted brilliantly, and holed an eightyarderl at the last hole. Havers’ play was unconvincing. Tie took 41 out, and 43 home. The semi-finals resulted :—F. Ball beat Seymour 3 up and 1 to play ; Havers beat McNeill, 2 up and 1 to play. HAVERS’ VICTORY. LONDON, June 24. In the golf final at Gleneagles Havers beat Ball, 6 and 5. EXCUSES FOR KIRKWOOD.

(i . LONDON, June 25. Ihe “Daily Telegraph” says that the explanation of Kirkwood’s surprising defeat is perfectly simple, being Seymour’s miraculous putting. Going homewards he hacked out of bunkers to pinside and holeside putts of every imaginable length. His mistakes went unpunishable length. His mistakes went unpunished. Seymour had only to dig the ball out to somewhere on the green, and down went the putt, these must have been bitter moments lor Kirkwood, who had set his heart on winning the tournament, to atone ioi his failure at Troon. He returns to America empty-handed, to join lagen. The most galling thing, from Kirkwood’s point of view, was that lorn the moment Seymour opened his devastating torrent, the Australian made only one bad shot, but this brought about his destruction.
