NGAHERE CHURCH

NEAV BUILDING OPENED

The ceremony of blessing and opening the re built Church c f the Sacred Heart was performed at Ngahere yesterday by the Very Rev. Father J. Long, : Adm. Although the day was miserably cold and wet there was a large attendance of Cathoiic s frem Ngahere and the surrounding districts of Ahaura, Blackball, Nelson Creek and Greymouth. A collection taken towards defraying the remaining expenses on the building realised £42 10/-. ! The Rev Father M. Fogarty, prior to the ceremony, briefly thanked the Rev. Fathers Long and T. O’Regan who Lad administer'd the parish of Ahaura during the speaker’s illness. The church had many sacred associations and the enthusiasm which the people Lad shown in the scheme of re-building was worthy of the traditions of their forefathers who in the old days, when the Church wa s at No Town were conspicuous for their zeal for the FaitL. Among the many who deserved his best thanks for’ the time, money and labour they had devoted to the work of re-erection were Messrs J. Costigan (donor of the section), M. McLaughlan. Jas. Mulcair, Jas. Egan, Donnellan Bros., T. Hogan, Mullins. Carter, Jas. Smyth. Jas. Sullivan. M. Connors, A. Welsh and Mrs Bernard, and the contractors, Messrs D. Sullivan and R. Hanrahan.

After the ceremony of blessing and opening the building, in which the Rev. Father Long was assisted by the Revs. Dr. McEvoy, Fathers Al. Fogarty. T. O’Regan ami P. Madden, flic Church was solemnly dedicated to Ij’e Sacred Heart. TLe occasional sermon was preached by Dr. McEvoy, who gave a. graphic outline of the histon- of the Church based on the text, “Behold I am with you all davs, even to the consummation of the world.”

The cermnonv concluded with Benediction. The singing throughout was provided by a choir of volunteers.
