NELSON NOTES

(Own Correspondent.)

NELSON, June 15. The Fruitgrowers’ Association, at their meeting, held at iVlotueka on Friday of last week, referred, to tne great and valuable services rendered to the industry by Air. A. Gilbert, of Stoke. Their appreciation took tangible form in the presentation of a handseme Kaiapoi rug. iVlr. E. H. Bisley congratulated Mr. Gilbert on his famous orchard, which he said was a great, credit to Mr. Gilbert, to Stoke, and the whole fruit growing district. Air. Forsyth and Air. Attwood (President of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation) also spoke in appreciative terms of the willing help of Air. Gilbert to the industry, as he had given of his best for the benefit of all growers. In acknowledging the gift and the. appreciative remarks of the speakers, Air. Gilbert said he accepted them as tangible evidence that they had not forgotten their old colleague. His relations with all of them when in office had been most cordial. He also remarked on the improved facilities on the local wharf for the handling of fruit, and also the new wharf built recently at Alapua. Work was in hand to improve the harbour here. He referred to the value of the South American markets for Nelson apples, one company being prepared to send strainers to load apples for South America and England. Mr. Gilbert assured those present of his constant efforts for the progress of the district, and thanked those who had so loyally assisted him in office. He expressed a sincere hope that the Nelson Provincial Council would continue to do good work for the fruit industry. Old AVest Coasters will regret to learn of the death of Air. Gus Feehan, an old Reefton boy, and second son of Airs, and the late Timothy Feehan, of that town. Mr. Feehan had been in the employ fo the Town Abattoirs here for twenty years. He had been ill only for a few days. A very fine plan of providing work for unemployed returned soldiers has been adopted here by the R.S.A., who recently raised £440 by their poppy day effort. This sum will be subsidised by the City Council, and the whole to be spent in city improvements, the labour provided being for returned unemployed soldiers only.
