ATTACK ON RANGER

A LENIENT SENTENCE. (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, June 16. In passing sentence on Herbert Holgate, Alfred Glover, Leonard Grundy and Richard Daly, Mr Justice Herdman said that the assault on Routledge was brutal in the extreme, but he would take into consideration that the prisoners were not of the criminal class and their characters were previously good. The crime was committed when they were heated with drink, but drunkenness was no excuse ai d men foolish enough to drink to excess and play the part of cowardly bullies must pay for the unlawful behaviour. His Honor paid a glowing tribute to the rangers, and said that they must be protected. He would take into consideration that the jury found .the prisoners not guilty of the more serious offence of attempted murder, and would sentence each man to twelve months’ hard labour.
