A TOWN BEAUTIFUL
HOPE FOR GREY.MOI'TH
The kindling of a little interest among the citizens was advocated by Grelyniouth Borough Councillors last- evening as the best beauty tonic that could be recommended for the town. Two examples were provided of the “right kind of spirit." 'flic nrst was a business-like offer made by Mes-rs J. Thomas and J. Brown, a deputation from the West Coast Rugby League. Tn view of the approaching season, it was stated by the deputation, tb.e League was anxious that the Recreation flround slould be repaired and levelled. ’ The League would supply the labour and material for this work, and all that it required from the Council was the loan of two carts. If they could get these, in time, they would be ready to start tomorrow afternoon. Cr IT. F. Doogan thought the offer was cheap. The Recreation Ground had undoubtedly been neglected for years, although there was on the books of the Council a resolution that when available £lOO should be. spent on the work. The League had made a good offer, and was saving the Council money. In moving that the Chairman of the Works Committee, the Chairman of the Beautifying Committee and the Engineer be, empowered to act in the matter Cr Doogan said it reflected a fine spirit on the part of the League, and they wanted more of this spirit if they wished the town to improve. Cr W. C. S. Colclough supported Cr Doogan's remarks and seconded the motion which was carried. The second example was set by Cr R. J. Williams. Later in the evening, Cr Doogan said he thought it should be made known for the benefit of Councillors that Cr Williams had been instrumental in having seats placed in Petrie Avenue, and towards this end has collected the following amounts: —W. R. Kettle £1 Is, J. McLean £1 Is, P. Blanchfield £1 Is, F. Parkinson £1 Is, A. Naylor £1 Is, Ashby Bergh and Co. £1 Is, and W. Sampson 10s. Cr Williams had done this work on his own initiative and very few knew of it. He had said earlier in the evening that they wanted a better spirit among the citizens and more interest in the beauty of the town. Cr Williams had evinced that spirit, and he would move that both Cr Williams and the gentlemen who had subscribed to his list be thanked for pic assistance they had given in beautifying Petrie Avenue. Cr Colclough seconded the motion, and joined in Cr Doogan’s eulogy of Cr Williams. He had seen the seats, which were a credit to the town, and Jie had heard visitors remarking on the appearance of the avenue. The motion was carried unanimously.
“Thank you, gentlemen!” said Cr Williams, laconically, glancing up from his papers. “I intend to continue!”
