THIEVES' SENTENCE.
1J UDGE (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 8. A number of prisoners, an young, were sentenced at the Supreme Court. Mr. Justice Herdman criticised gravely the crimes of the young woman Annie Walker, who pleaded, guilty to three charges of forgery and false pretences. tehe had falsified her employer’s booas and obtained a sum of about ±AUU, and also forged orders for a fair sum. Mis Honour said that he would weigh the seriousness of these crimes, and also the fact that she had made a false accusation against a police officer, though she subsequently withdrew it. .Lie did not think ii was a case for probation. The accused had | systematically, deliberately, and per- | sistently helped herself to her em- | ployer’s property. She would be sen- | fenced to one year’s reformative treat- | nien,t which the Judge reminded her, was subject to the review of the Prisons Board. A youth,. Clifford Double, was sentenced to six months’ hard labour for breaking, entering and theft at Taumarurui. His Honour referred to the 1 fact that the prisoner had previously i been sentenced for theft and false preI fences, also for theft, and treated I leniently. The present sentence was imposed in the hope that the lad would come, to his senses. Siv months’ imprisonment was imposed on Henry Samuel Barton for false pretences at Tauranga. He had two previous convictions. John Edward Calvert, aged 19. for attempted false pretences, was given two years’ probation. A Maori, Hariuha Pei. was ordered 18 months’ imprisonment for theft of a heifer. Tie had committed several previous offences.
