Attention is drawn to the fact that in the preliminary notices issued by the Commissioner of flaxes under the Tax Act, the super-tax is stated to be 33 1-3 per cent, whereas the Finance Act, last session prescribes the same rate as under the Act of 1920, namely, 50 per cent. The question is raised as to what statutory authority exists for the alteration.

West Coast markets have become overstocked with coal, and it is quite possible that within the next few weeks some of the mines will either have to close down or adopt the go slow policy. The coal industry is drifting into chaos in the wake of the timber industry. A firm trading in a large wav in coal received word from Christchurch to-day to send no coal no matter how good tho quality. At the beginning of the week the vessel “France” arrived at Lyttelton with -,7000 tons of Welsh coal.
