BRUNNER BOROUGH

— MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Brunner Borough Council, a communication was received from the Resident Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, stating that the grant for the main Grey Valley road through the Borough was not to be regarded as an annual one.—A general discussion took place in regard to this and the Council could not understand tho Minister’s attitude after promising an annual grant until legislation provided for the upkeep of main roaas, and now cancelling th 3 grant. It was pointed out that the Grey County and West, land County receive annual grants up to £5O per mile for upkeep of arterial roads. Yet the travelling public and Government expect the Brunner Borough to provide four and a-half miles of road for outside traffic. Councillors suggested reverting to the toll gate unless the grant is continued and that the Minister be informed to that effect. The Minister of Public Works, wrote regarding the Wallsend-Taylor-villc bridge stating that the conditions under which he agreed to find money to assist in the above work were that his Department would take no responsibility for the saf. ty of the bridge, but that in vkw of the very urgent representations on the matter he would grant £750 to assist tip Council to repair the bridge, provided the work was carried out to the approval of the Resident Engineer. —It was resolveo. that the letter be received and that the plans be secured and the work started.

In connection with the recent visit of the Hon. Mr. Anderson (Minister of Mines) the Council took s rong exception to outsiders coming along ana listening to what the deputation had to say, and passing disparaging remarks on ma ters that, cone rn d t’-.c Council. The Minister for Railways not having replied fully on what was being done regarding Brunner bridge to tire Council’s tolegram of a month ago It was decided to forward another te’egram at once.
