NELSON BOARD. S (Special to the Star.) NELSON, June 27. The Nelson Education Board met today, present: Messrs Smith (chairman), Boyes, Treacer, Mclntyre, Canavan, and Baigent. Mr. Cottrell was granted leave of absence. The monthly report of the Director of the Technical School, Westport, was received and considered. Air. Johnstone was authorised to do repair work required by the Technical Department. The salary of Sadie Atkinson, student teacher, in domestic science, was increased to .£6O per annum. 'Lhe Supervisor, Technical School, Reefton, reported that ail classes, except woodwork, have completed their course. Mr. Mannings reported that in his opinion the new Technical High School building would be completed by the end of the year. Air. Alclntyre was asked to inquire and report at the next meeting re the position of the school reserves at I West port. The Board's solicitor reported that a new site had been acquired for a teacher’s residence at AVaiuta. The Department notified the Board that as the Oparara bridge will not be completed for some nine, months, the erection of a school there would be held over. Air. Alclntyre urged the erection of the new school at once, and the Board decided again to ask f.,r authority to erect a school. The application of a settler to have Rotokohu school fenced, was referred to Air. Leaper to carry out. The AVaiuta Committee’s request for a shelter shed was also referred to the 1 architect with powqi" to act, if the i committee js willing to assist. Aliss Slgley is to be offered the position of assistant. Two applications to lease 1* airdown school reserve were refused, and tenders are to bo called. Air. Alclntyre was deputed to represent the Board at the opening of the Alawheraiti school. The Department notified the Board that it could not allow inspectors to act as- instructor at the school, for instruction of uncertificated teachers which opens at Nelson technical School on July 9th and continues for ’ a fortnight. It was decided to again urge the Department to grant permission. Forty teachers will attend. The Department agreed to the reappointment of an organising teacher for Karamea and Inangahua districts. Mr. Jordan (Seddonville), will start on August Ist if approved by the Department. The Board is again urging that a school be established at Nikau. It was decided to ask authority to establish a household school at AVhangapeka. The Millerton committee wrote objecting to visitors granting half holidays. Air. Alclntyre explained that the latter probably referred to that holiday granted during the recent visit of the Minister of Alines, and it would not occur again. The old contract for conveyance of children to Little Grey school was terminated, and the new contract entered into by the- committee was confirmed. ' Aliss Al. O’Sullivan was transferred to Stockton as assistant, Airs Allen Arapito was granted three months sick leave as per regulations.
