I’ETONE GASWORKS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 27. The members of the Petoiio Borough Council to-night discussed the dispute between the Council and its gaswork employees and the Council's drivers. Regarding the former, it was decided to take action to bring the present employees under the provisions of the Arbitration Act, so that if a dispute arose the Court could give a decision. The Mayor and Councillor Churchhouse dissented. Regarding the drivers, it was decided to reinstate all but one of them. The matters in dispute were referred to the Conciliation Commissioner.
BRITISH MINERS. SETTLEMENT SECURED. Recd. noon. LONDON, June 27. The coal miners and the owners have arrived at an agreement on the wages question enabling a resumption of work on Monday, but they meet Mr Lloyd George at ten o’clock to-night, regarding the Government’s ten millions subsidy. Mr. Chamberlain in the House of Commons, replying to questions, said that he was not prepared to introduce legislation compelling owners to submit the differences to an impartial board of arbitration whose decision would be binding. One hundred and sixteen locomotives had been adapted for burning oil fuel and others were being prepared. Ho also announced that if financial assistance to the miners was necessary to end the coal dispute, the House would be asked to consider it at the earliest possible moment. AMERICAN LEADERS. Recd 11 a.m. NEW YORK, Juno 26. Samuel Gompors was re-elected by the Denver convention as president of the American federation of labour, beating Mr. Lewis by twenty-five thousand to thirteen thousand votes. This is Gomper’s fortieth term of office He overcame most bitter opposition on the part of the more Radical elements.
