GAMBLING CHARGE

CONVICTION QUASHED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, June 27. Air. Justice Reed heard an appeal by Arthur Owen against the Alagistrate’s conviction on a charge of keeping a common gaming house, with sentence of two months’ imprisonment. In his evidence to-day the chief police witness Joseph Brown, contradicted himself so frequently under crossexamination by Air Al. Myers that the latter suggested to Air. Justice Reed that it was useless to go further. Air. Nolan, = the Crown Prosecutor, agreed. , His Honour said that Brown s statement was so obviously contradictory that the evidence could not be accepted. The appeal was allowed and the conviction was quashed.
