OWNERSHIP OF HOT LAKES.
ARAWA TRIBE'S CLAIM.

ROTORUA, October 16.
The claim of the Arawa tribe for .wnership of the lakes in the district was opened before Judge Wilson in Ihe Native Laud Court to-day. Mr. .F. Earie appeared for the claimants, and Mr. J. E. Prendoville for the Crown. Counsel agreed to take the case of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti as a test case. Mr. Earle addressed the Court, claiming that the lands around these lakes, and the lakes themselves', were in undisputed possession of the Natives till recent years, when the Government, having bought part of the lands, charged the Natives for fishing licenses. Mr. Earle address is expected to continue throughout to-morrow.
