THE OTIRA TUNNEL.
.'MEETING OF HEADINGS. DATE OF OFFICIAL CEREMONY FIXED. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr. 11. Holland), "who is also president of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel League, has received a letter, from the Minister of Public Works' (Sir William Fraser) suggesting Wednesday, August 21st, as a suitable date upon which to hold the official ceremony in connexion with the meeting of the headings in the Arthur's Pass tunnel The Minister stated that by the date mentioned it was certain that the headings would have met, and it would also avoid clashing with the Grand National fixture. The Mayor intends replying that the date suggested will be suitable. Mr Holland has received an offer from the Lyttelton Marine Band of its services in connection with the ceremony. Further arrangements in connexion with the ceremony will be made as the date upon which it is to be held draws nearer. THE "HOLE" PIERCED. Late on Saturday the cheering news that the tunnel had been pierced was announced in Christchurch and al. down the Coast, and was received enthusiastically everywhere It is now stated that there was but 15 feet to negotiate to bring about the culmination of this historic public work. The task set the pnaineers was one featured with overwhelming difficulties, and it is with a feeling of gratification that the congratulations of the people on either side of the hill are extended the authorities in their success. A Christchurch telegram advises that penetration wis carried out by the operation of a lift iron rod.
