MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD.

DEMAND FOR INCREASED PAY. (Per Presd Association.) WELLINGTON, July 18. In view of the lapse on the 50th November next, of the present industrial agreement between the Merchant Service Guild and the Union Steam Ship Company, the Blackball Coal Co., and the Westport Coal Co., the captains and deck officers in the service of those companies are taking steps to obtain ail-round increases in pay. In the demands for a new agreement, which have already been drawn up by the Guild, substantial increases are sought. The reasons given are the higher rate of wages ruling in England and elsewhere, and the increased cost of living. The captains and mates of coastal steamers are not affected by the movement, as their agreement is for the duration i f the war.
