SYDNEY, July 18.—As a sequel to- the motor car jewel rohLery, the police learned that the thieves would attempt to dispose of the proceeds, and set a trap at a certain pawnbroker’s. A man appeared, but be evidently recognised the detective, and fired point blank,' wounding the detective twice. An exciting chase followed in which -other detectives joined. Fifteen shots were exchanged, but the suspect escaped. CHARGES AGAINST THE POLICE. SYDNEY, This Day.—Cabinet, has approved of the appointment of a Royal Commission to enquire into the allegations against the police in the I.W.W. trials.
