Duncan (secretary). „ The- following appeals were heard : Hubert Elliot (Class.-A). Appellant said he waa married m lylG. He was appealing for financial help, as his railway appeal had been dismissed. Mr. Evans,said he-would recommend the financial assistance asked for, and if it was granted he* would dismiss the appeal. Appellant would then go in the November draft.

Robert Achimson appealed on behalf of his Hon, William Robert AdanWn, aged 27 years. Appellant had another ton in camp. He also bad a daughter. It years of age. He possessed 1,'23U shee}k ; 2lo cattle and SO horses, it vcaa impossible to get men to do the work down South. His son wa» a, great help on the farm alud did tho* shearing. The Chairman said he would let the appeal stand over io order that the shearing could be done on their own farm and assist ■others in shearing on theirs. The appeal would then be dealt with in the new year. Mr. John Irwin (Woodstock) having gone info camp, tho appeal by his mother, Mrs Jane Irwin, was withdrawn. Jameg H. Cropper, of Waitalui (Mr. Wells). The man liad gone into camp and was sent back unfit. Sergt.Major Atken said Cropper had received indefinite leave from the Camp Commandant. —Adjourned sine die. Charles Pfahlert appealed on behalf of bisi foreman baker, James E. Laughton. Laughton was 31 years of age, and had two brothers at the front. Pfahlert employed two men and two boys at his trade and was unable to do much himself owing to bad health. James Laughton, in giving evidence on his own behalf, stated that although ho was a single man he had a mother and one sister depending on him. He had two brothers, both serving. The Chairman said the record of tho family was a good one and the trade was an essential one. He would therefore adjourn the application sine die, but the appellant (Laughton) may lie called up at any time.

His lather was dependent on him. Richard Speed gave evidence, stating that Cain was essential to the work of the dredge. John Patrick Hansbury, itossi (Clas,. A). Mr. Murdoch stated that appellant was the.mail contractor for South Wet-Hand. He wji>a single man, .'>(> years of age. Appellant had two brothers, one at the front and One in the Second Division. He wa« looking after his brotherg farm, and had 80 ewes and 25 cattle on the farm- He also had the contract to deliver goods from the railway to Kohsi and tbe mail contract from Rossi to Wehek'a. Appellant had difficulty in getting drivers, as experienced men were required for the work. Mr. A. E. McGregor (Chief Postmaster) gave evidence that (he linn of Hansbury and Haddock bad carried out their duties satisfactorily. 'Hie hearing was adjourned to next sitting. John Manera Ross, Class A. (Mr. Murdoch) was unable to bo present owing to flooded rivers. He had been called before and hiyi case was adjourned sine die. After hearing the evidence, of his mother the case was adjourned again. Neil H. Nicholson appealed on behalf of Henry Jones,' of Arahura. This case had come on from a previous sitting. Nicholson stated that he had 26 men working for him at tlie mill, and all the single men except two had enlisted and been turned down. After considerable examination on the part of the Chairman. Mr. Evans decided to order a fresh medical examination, and if appellant passed he would have to go. The case was adjourned for medical examination.

Thomas. Moynihan, Kumara, Class A. (Mr. Murdooli). Appellant stated hi g parents were alive. He had three brothers, one, about 30, at the front, tho other two were boys. He had six sisters, three' of whom were at home. His father a. man, and himself worked a sluicing clajm that had token nine months to open out. It

TENTH BALLOT APPEALS. SITTING AT GREYMOUTH. The Military Service Board for the Canterbury District aut at the Greyniouth Courthouse this morning. Mr. J. S. Evans (Chairman), Mr. J. D.» Milton, and Mr. E. 0. Studholme •were the members of the Board, Captain Pilkington appearing as military representative. Thomas! McNeil, butcher, Cobden, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. He married in November hist, and had four brothers, one over military age and two serving.—Adjourned sine die to be called up later. Baxter Bros. (Mr. Kitehingham) appealed on behalf of Louis Kennedy. Captain Pilkington said he required some information from Kennedy, who had been drawn in the fourth ballot. He had had notice to attend and be intended to call evidence.

Mr. Kitehingham said that Kennedy was a. sawyer and it had not been thought necessary for him to appear in. view of the appeals by the millers for sawyers.

The case was allowed to stand down until later on in the sitting, to 'seo if Kennedy put in an appearance. George Sleenan Peck (Mr. Kitehingham), on account of family reason. —Adjourned till January.

Smest Samuel Cochrane, plumber (Mr. Chalk), who had three brother.* under age and two serving, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. His employer, W. Cos telle, gave evidence that two of his plumbers had been, called in the ninth a'.nd tenth ballot respectively. He bad not appealed on behalf of the ninth ballot man, who goes into camp next month. It wagi impoftible to obtain plumbers t(» replace them. Captain Pilkington, asked that the appeal be adjourned to see if Jackson went into camp.

He had three brothers serving-, one of whom bad been killed at the front; The Chairman said the family record was good. Two sons were serving and another had been killed.
