SICK AND NEEDY.

REEFTON HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. (Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held at the Council Chambers, Reef tun, last evening. Present: Messrs H. Belts, W. Irving, W. Dunn W. Saundera, T. Watson, E. S. Robson, G. B. Molnroe. Dr. Condon was. also present. In the unavoidable absence of Mr. J. O'Regan (Chairman), Mr. Belts was voted to the chair. CORRESPONDENCE. From Lands Department, stating the vesting of land in the Board had been noted for legislation.—Received. From Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing Dr. Yalintne's opinion regarding the erection of a sanatorium for consumptives by the combined Boards. Mr. Robson moved_ that this Board co-operate with the Nelson and other Boards in the establishment of a sanatorium for consumptives.—Seconded by Mr. Saunders and carried. From Hannam's, Ltd., Sydney, enclosing particulars of steriliser.—Received. From F. H. Lee, secretary of North Blackwater Ltd., enclosing 5s contributions.—Received. From Dr. Chesson, in regard to infectious disease, and complaining that tbe Inspector was not notified until five days l later. The secretary stated that he replied showing there was no delay in Reefton. From Chandler and Fisher, Ltd., Vnlncouver in regard to X-ray apparatus.—Received. From Dr. Chesson, in regard to lvtfiarziosis, an infectious d&ease caused by drinking infected water. — •Received. From Dr. Valintine, recommending that only trained nurses be kept on the staff, and asking that Miss Temple-ton be allowed facilities to complete her training. Dr. Conlon stated this young lady

had received about 'eighteen lectures, whereas only twelve are stipulated. Mr. Belts moved, that the Medical Superintendent reports that Misw Templeton had received eighteen leciiiiv,i to date, atud in his opinion would pass the examination. —Seconded by Mr. Saunders and carried. From W. Bruce,' secretary of the Knox Home for Incurable;-., Auckland, Ming the Homo was now open for patients.—Received. Krom Nurse McNab, asking for an article for the hospital at WaauttuRequest granted. From .). A. Petersen, hon. secretary of Waiuta Nurses' Hospital, forwarding .£9 10s.-—Received. From J. Cullen, Victor Electric Corporation, Chicago, forwarding catur logues and ilustrations of articles. — hic-ttived. From Dr. E. 11. Scott, forwarding report for month.—Received. The Matron applied for various articles. Mr. Mcrnroe moved that the secretary procure the necessaries. —Seconded by Mr. Saunders and carried. Miss Barry, Matron, asked that Miss Teinpleton's salary be increased, also that an increase be given Mrs Xewcombe, the laundress. Mr. Irving moved that Miss Templeton be given am increase of £() per year.—Seconded by Mr. Molnroe and carried. The Chairman moved that the laundress be granted an advance of Os per week, as recommended by the Matron.—Seconded by Mr. Saunders and carried. From Dr. Conlon, protesting gainst-the appointment of Dr. Scott to the hospital, stating that the appointment is not in accordance with agreement made between him (Dr. Coinlon) and the Hospital Board, or i the by-laws. Mr. Belts moved that the letter from Dr. Conlon bo held over until next month, and that in the mean<nne the agreement with the Medical Superintendent be typed out and a copy supplied to each member of the Board.—Seconded by Mr. Watson and carried. The Medical Superintendent's report was read. Mr. Irving moved that authority be given to Dr. Conlon to procure Kths for renovating the lavatory.— Seconded b Mr. Molnroe and carried. Irving moved that the old-age pensioners be granted 15s per month instead of 10s as formerly—Seconded by Mr. Molnroe and carried. ■Mr. Betts moved that the wardsmen be granted assistance in getting Hie garden into crop.—Seconded by Mr, Mclnroe and carried. Applications for the vacancies on the hospital staff were opened as fol-lows:-—Certificated nurse: L. Eraser, Wanganui; Clarice Porter. Reefton. Mr. Irving moved that Mis S i Frazer be appointed. Mr. Robson seconded fhe motion. He would he pleased to see the local applicant gain the position, but they advertised for a certificated nurse and tliev should appoint one. Mr. Dunn moved that Mrs Porter be appointed. They all knew this applicant and she was suitable as far as health was concerned and they did not know anything- about the other applicant. Mr. Saunders said that Mrs Porter had two certificates:, and had only just failed to take the major one. Mr. Betts said that according to ■u' by-laws they could only appoint a registered nurse. He would very much like to appoint the local applicant, but they could not go contrary to the by-laws. Mr. Mclnroe endorsed the Chairman's remarks. Mr. Betts moved that the appointment of a nurse stand over till the next meeting of the Board.—Second: ed by Mr. Saunders and carried. Probationers :—Miss M. C. Fritters, Hokitika; Daisv E.
