HEAVY RAIN.

RIVERS RUNNING HIGH. WAITAHU BRIDGE DAMAGED.

The heavy rainfall during the past 48 hours has caused the rivers to become raging torrents. The Grey River rose' considerably, but there-was little danger of the river coining over. The current was still running strongly to-day,. and prevented any shipping movements but the waters had fallen considerably.

The rainfall was very heavy in the Reef ton district, and the Waitahn bridge, on the road between Westport and Reefton, was considerably damaged. One of the supporting piers,was undermined and the. bridge sagged very badly, and all traffic from either side was interrupted. A gang of men proceeded to tlfo scene this morning to carry out the work' of repairs. The heavy sea has pounded the wreck of the Oppuri very severely, and the deck has opened from the. forecastle head to the bridge. To-day one of the masts was taken out of the vessel and a shot tired for the purpose of blowing off the bow portion of the derelict. FLOODS AT GORE. [Per Press Association.! GORE, ‘September 26.
