[Our Own Correspondent.] OBITUARY. Another old pioneer of the district in the person of August Spohr passed away at the Westland Hospital on Tuesday. Deceased was a native ot Germany and 78 years of age. He had been in his usual health until a day or two ;i(go, when he was taken sudden-

The prize winners at the juvenile fancy dress ball, in aid of the Bed Cross Fund, were as follows : Girl under 9 years—Jean But land, ‘‘A French Vivendiere.” Edna Heenan was only one vote behind, and Mr. P, Stewart kindly donated a special prize lor her representation of “Topsy.” Girl over 9 years-—Melba Spoor, “A Pineapple.” Boy - under 9 years—Max Hunter, “Santa Claus.”
Boy over 9 years—W. Wallace, “Lieutenant of Highlanders.” The Grey “Evening Star” runners, Len Hughes and Austin Sumner, sold their papers, and realised 2s more for the fund. (Had the management known of 'this, we would willingly have sent the hoys extra papers of the latest issue in order to help them in their noble efforts to help a good cause.) The ball was a success in every .way and great interest was taken in the costumes by young and old. The Ked Cross Fund will benefit by about £l3. MIKONUI LIVER BRIDGE. The Government Engineer estimates that, it will cost £BOOU to bridge the Mikonui Liver. This he considers too great an expenditure in these times to proceed with the work. that htewart, Chapman and Co. will proceed at once to build a bricjge, which will be a private one. The bridge will be built to suit the millers only. Had the Government met the firm in a fair understanding the bridge would have been a great boom to all, especially the southern settlers.
