MAWHIRAITI SPORTS
TO-MOimOW (St. Patrick's • Day).
The Mawhera-iti sports seem io be [lie main attraction for tomorrow (St- Patrick's Day;, tor choppers and runners alike, and, judging by the acceptances received, visitors to Mawhera-iti can look forward to a good day's outing- The Jktua ' Memorial Handicap, 120yds, has drawn the attention of some fair runners, including U'Callaghan (New Zealand sprint champion). Taking*a line through previous performances, Thomas, Simpson, ])evaney, U'Callaghan, and MeElwee look like being among the prize money. Pedrazzi and Coulson hold good outside chances, and will make flu* champion keep his toes out of the ground. .Fitzgerald is also in this event, but the distance may not suit him and he should be more at home in the 440yds event, widen has been not as attractive as the former. Fitzgerald and U'Callaghan share the post of honour (scratch), and a. - good race should be witnessed. between this pair. Neither have yet been tried over t'ne distance, so an interesting race should result. Thomas, Simpson aud l)e----\aiiey may run well up, also an outsider in F'auselow (l)unedin), but the scratch men should bu well forward, when She tapes are broken. The Perotti 'Memo!'!-:!! Chop has drawn the large field of twentyseven axemen, and a hard problem is ahead in selecting placegetters. The same applies to the Upright Chop in a Held of twentytwo choppers- Flaherty scorns So be fairly well treated, and whoever beats him will just_ about win. A few locals are also in this event and may be capable of bringing about a surpriseThe Local Chop has drawn the attention of a few stalwart choppers and has not been overlooked by our worthy friend, "the wily Celestial," two of whom intend trying their hand with the axe. "Howell (Hhiau) is a pronounced favourite, but should be run close by Saraty, Mduroe, Hart, Fazelow, Connors and Murray, all of whom are promising athletes with Wilson, Sweeney, and Flaherty not far behindJudging by reports the Sawing Match is a walk over for Powley and Vial.'of Keefton, but no attempt will be made to pick the other placed menTrains arrive in Mawhera-m from Greymouth at 0.15 a.m. and leave on* the return juorney at 4.55 p.m- and, in view of this fact, the Commit fee have decided to star! the sports at 11 a-in. instead of V2 (noon) as advertised. Quite a stock yard has been erected to hold the surplus stock, and an auction sale will bo in pro- / press at the conclusion of the
sports. mi 1 1 The Reefton Band will also bo present, -and when visitors arc tired of sport and music they may retire to the refreshment rooms, where tliev will be well received. Post-entry events, side shows, etc. will be in progress during the afternoon- All proceeds rit the meeting will be devoted to the Eeefton and Waiutn Hospitals, and with this end in view the Sports Committee requests till natrons of sport to roll up and help in such a worthy object.
