Although she was "giving away," the ship did nto appear to take action. He saw the liner bearing down at right angles a few feet away, and he put the helm to starboard, hoping to get round her bows. When the Arahura struck he immediately stopped the engines, but the liner struck the Arahura again. As the slaps drilled apart to ordered' the engines astern.
