THU ARCHBISHOP’S STATEMENT

CHAIRMAN’S CRITICISM

WELLINGTON, March 12

Brief but forceful remarks were made, bv the Chairman of the Third Wellington Military Service Board (Mr W- H. S. Moorhouae) to-day, in reference to a statement made bv Archbishop 0 Snea in address delivered at Wellington on 25th February. Mr Moorhouse said he was very sorry that Archbishop O’Shea was not present, becuase he desired to know whether the report as published in the papers was a correct one. Things had been said to which he strongly objected. Archbishop O’Shea had stated (according to the import) “that he was sorry to say sectarian bigots had got to work with the result that the week before last a military board in the city had refused to exempt two theological students.” . Of course while the board was doing tne work in which it was engaged it must expect uncharitable criticism from the un. .r o dlv which it was bound to offend. U did 'not expect that _ from the highest authorities of a Christian Church.
