RACING NEWS AND NOTES,

(By “Aeronaut.”)

Hymesbra, tin? Kara mu champion, should' annex the Jackson Stakes tomorrow if allowed to start.

Client, winner of the Wanganui Cup yesterday, is a five-year-old horse by Eiovation — Bonhenr. Client had previously shown a tendency to stay, and loraf sports who saw him race' at tho Wellington meeting were quite prepared tor his victory yesterday. Glenorchy had an easy win in the Westmero Hurdles at Wanganui yesterday. The Strowan gelding had previously shown winning form this season having won the Spring Hurdles at the last Feilding Meeting. He returned a nice price yes tei’day, considering there were only four starters. The ever-increasing scarcity of boys to ride work is becoming a serious mutter to. owners, both locally and in other parts of the Dominion. This week the well-known local jockey, F. Holmes, received, word asking him if he could go to Nelson to ride Mr. Honor’s and other horses at that meeting next month. Owing to being unable to obtain anyone to ride work during his absence Holmes had to refuse what looked like being a profitable meeting to him. Ambngst the horsemen drawn in the recent ballot were Bert Rae, the wellknown cross-country rider. As everyone knows he lost a limb some years ago. For some time past he has'been acting as sergeant-major in the home defence.

For some time past the rule relating to , the employment of stable servants has been , more honored in the breach than in the observance, but the Auckland District Committee have taken a firm stand in the matter, and have fined a well-known trainer £2O for non-compliance with the rules. Rules 5 and 6of part 21 states; (5) No trainer shall, without the permission of the District Committee, employ any jockey, apprentice, or stable servant as a stable servant until he has, in writing, applied to his last employer (if any) as'to his character, and received in reply a satisfactory written character of the servant ; (6) every trainer or other person failing tp comply with any. of the rules may b fined by the stewards or committee, or by the District Committee, in any sum not exceeding £2O. Of fate it has been freely rumoured that jockeys have been using electric appliances on racecourses in .this State (says a West Australian writer). Some years ago a jockey was killed on one of the registered course’s, and an electric battery was found attached to his body. Since then no discoveries have been reported, but the W.A. Racing Association, the unregistered body here, have exercised great care, and during the week at their Bicton course they'discovered a boy named Wedd had used an electric .battery. He rode in the Third Division Handicap, and his mount,;-. Wifcty, was, made favourite, • but did not get a place. The stewards became suspicious, because he was canning overweight, and, they, found id;the lead-bag the battery, ftom which wires rap.’ to- the - flaps of the saddle on each >iile.. The, battery could be used Hy pullv4g.ii string,' but it was of crude , However, unless the stewards examined the saddle it would not -have been discovered. As soon as the -.stewgids ■' found' the battery they and are inquiring into,'the . culpability or otherwise'of the connections of the horse.
