FIERCE FIGHT AT THE LIPA AWFUL SLAUGHTER. RUSSIANS CROSS THE CARPATHIANS. (N.Z. press association—COPYßlGHT.]• PETROGRAD, July 20. In the fight at Lipa the Russians forced the line at 8 o’clock m the morning of July 16th, wading under machine gun and rifle fire through water and marsh above their waists and often to their armpits, , The engineers labored under heavy shell-fire to construct a bridge ?to enable 'the cavalry and guns to cross in pursuit of the enemy. • * / ■ The Austrian end of the bridge was a horrible place, being’ congested with dead, (Jyin o* and horribly wounded men. Many of the Austrians , were apparently wounded by their own guns while , attempting to prevent the bridging of the stream. the Austrians now simply refused to fight after an initial resistance ,and preferred to surrender en bloc rather than risk heiufi' cut to pieces on the' retreat. General Lechitsky’s cavalry are now across the Carpathians on the main road from Knrlibaba, towards Marmaros Sziget, and are threatening’ General Pflanzer’s communications, This is causing intense anxiety in Hungary AMSTERDAM, July 20. An Austrian Communique says; South-west of Delatyn we drove out Russian detachments which had penetrated to the western hank of the Pruth across the river.
A Vienna message says that Wegraphic communication with Marmarossziget has been" suspended. A large portion of the village of Curahraora, in the war ’zone, lias been destroyed by fire and five hundred houses "have been burned.
