PERSONAL NOTES.

Mr J. Nelson, of Nelson, Moate anl Co.'s tea emporium, Wellington, is at present visiting Greymouth. Mr Wilson, Government Valuer, ha\ been appointed valuer for the Nelson and Westland districts, his salary beginnig at £275 per annum. Mr J. Haskins, loco, engineer, and Mr P. Buck, chief clerk, left for Wanganui via Christchurch this morning in order to give evidence in a railway appeal case. A cable message from London states that Sir Clement Markham died as the result of shock from burns received at a fire in his residence. Mr Pearson, one of the principals in connection with the Rinm Goldfields flotation, arrived overland from Christchurch and Dunedin on Saturday evening. Messrs G. E. Perkins, E. J. Smith, and P. C. Heapry left yesterday en route to Denniston, where the annual meeting of the West Coast Oddfellows Lodges is being held to-day. Air John Ryall was to-day appointed a >nember of the Grevmouth Harbor Board by virtue, of his office as Chairman of the Grey County Council, and will take nis seat for the first time at to-night's meeting of the Board. Mr Thomas Tweedie, Presbyterian missionary, of the Runanga-Brunnerton district, is leaving for Dunedin this month. He is a graduate of the Glasgow Bible Training Institute, and is proceeding to Knox College to complete his studies for the ministrv.

Among the passengers expected to arrive in Greymouth from Christchurch tonight are the following, who crossed the Gorge in Cassidy's coaches: Mesdames Crowley, Thompson, Dowlmg, Sinclair, Richerson, Hendren, Cotton, Moriarty, Dunn, Cairns, Green, Pickles, Rudkin, Tiplcr, Smith; Messrs O'Siilliva:), Nicholson, Thomas, Dovle, Holding. Coshins, Steele; Privates Astridge and Wilton. A social and dance was held in Kumara, Junction schoolroom on Friday evening last for tho purpose of saying good-bye to Mr Harry Ellery, and presenting him with a beautiful wristlet watch from the residents and surrounding districts, on the eve of his departure for the front. Several songs and musical items were rendered, special mention being given to Mr Brown, who very ably sang some beautiful Scotch songs in his very best style; also the visitors from Greymouth who contributed to the evening's amusement.

A pleasing function took place at the Three Mile (Hokitika) last Friday evening, when the residents assembled to make a presentation to Mr Souter on the eve of his departure for the front. Mr Peebles, in a neat speech, marie tho presentation, And Mr Souter suitably replied, thanking his friends for such handsome gifts; and assuring them that he would never forget their kindness, especially Mrs Dick and Mr Edwards, • who had gone to such trouble to organise the function. Mr Souter, who has been absent from the district for several years, returned last week to bid good-bye to his relatives and friends prior to leaving for the.front with tho Tenth Reinforcements.
