CHARGE AGAINST. A BANK , TELLER. • & . COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE:' ;l . At the Magistrate's Court at. Greymouth this morning, before Miv : ' J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., , : . -V Michael Holly Malavey, on the in-, formation of Frank .Dining Clayton, visiting officer of the Bank" of New Zealand, was charged that, while teUer and cierk of the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, he did, on or about 10th Julv, 1915, at Greymouth, steal the sum "of £95, the property of the said Bank. i - . : ,, •, Mr. F. W. Kitchingham appeared on behalf of the accused.. .*;. Herbert P. Woodward, .manager- of the Bank of New Zealand in Greymouth said the accused had been employed'in the Bank as teller .since September, 1914. The accused.bad charge of large sums kept in a safe and, during the day time,, in the teller's "box at the counter.. His books were cheek- * ed at irregular periods—from time ;totime. On the morning of August 4th Mr. Clayton, bank inspector, made nh inspection of the accounts and found a shortage of £95 in the accused's silver. .' Witness and Recused were present during the examination referred to. ' The accused said the shortage was due to money taken by him (accused) to send to hisi mother in Auckland. The accused said he had taken £IOO and had paid £5 back out f>f his (accused's), own pocket, filso that he had written to his uncle for a loan of £IOO to make up the shortage. Accused had been in the employ of the Bank since 1902 ; his present salary was £230 and £ls teller's advance.

His first duty was to count the teller's cash which, was in the custody of the accused. This he did and found a shortage of £95 in the silver, coin.
