FIRE ON S.S. VICTORIA.

A fire broke out just after 2 o’clock this afternoon on the Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria, which arrived from the South this morning, en route to Auckland. Smoke was seen coming from No. 3 hold and the fire brigade was quickly summoned. One lead of hose was employed' and less than an hour saw the fire completely subdued. The seat of the blaze was amongst some chaff and flour stacked next to the bulkhead between No. 3 and No. 4 holds. This and a quantity of general cargo (all from Dunedin) made up the contents of No. 3 hold. The damage by fire is believed to bf> slight, but a good deal of water four d its way through the cargo. The hold is being unloaded, so that an examination of the ship may be made. It is not thought that she has suffered any structural injury. ■Three nr four men were overcome by fumes in the hold and were removed to the hospital, but their condition is not serious.
