In connection with Tuesday's inspection of cadets by General Sir lan Hamilton, the managemnet of the Union Steam Ship Company have offered to assist the De fence Department in the billeting scheme by placing at their disposal accommodation for 300 senior cadets on hoard the \Jonowai on Monday night. The cadets vill be provided by the Company with .in evening meal and with breakfast on Tuesdav morning. WINTER SHOW. The Prime Minister has intimated that lie will open the Winter Show at Dunedin on Tuesday, dune 2nd. Messrs G. and T. Young have given the A. and P. Association a challenge shield valued at twenty-five guineas for competition in export apple classes at this year's Show. OLD IDENTITY'S DEATH. Mr David Russell, who has been secretary to the Otago Acclimatisation Society for* the past 30 years, died suddenly on Tuesday afternoon. He had been suffering from heart trouble and an cttack of bronchitis added to this brought about l us death. Mr Russell was a prominent bowler some years ago. AN EXAMINER'S ERROR. Examiners in arithmetic are, like their pupils, not perfect. The Education Board vesterdav morning received from the Assistant Inspector General of Schools a ietter stating that the Department had discovered a .serious error in the case of Robert Irwin Austin, of Albany Street School, a candidate for a junior 'scholarship. The examiner in arithmetic assigned 173 marks, but in the schedule forwarded to the Department he entered only 73. This alteration gives the boytin aggregate of (-58 marks, entitling him lo be placed 14th on the merit list for ■he district. The lad was g.ven an aggregate of 558 and was placed 72nd on the merit list. The Department desired lo know if the. boy would have won an Education Board Junior Scholarship, and, if so. could the Board adjust the matter. The Secretary of the Hoard (Mr S. M. Park) explained that five candidates with marks less than those gained by Robert J. Austin were awarded scholarships in Division C The Board immediately decided to adjust the position, and t r> grant the lad a scholarship as from the commencement of the term.
