Repplying to Major Archer Shee in the House of Commons, Air. .Montague stated that the new rate for week-end messages to Australasia by the Pacific cable would become operative early next month. They would be forwarded the whole distance by telegraph if necessary, without additional charge. Major Archer Slice enquired why the further reduction advocated by the Dominions Commission was not made. Mr. Montague: It is a matter for the discretion of the Pacific Cable Board. Major Archer Slice enquired if the Min ister was aware that the Governments of Australia, and New Zealand were ready to provide the deficit, if any. Mr.' Montague: I do not know that from memory, but these matters concern countries other than th >. Dominions, upon which the loss, if av.y. would fall. Major Archer Shee. enquired whether the suggestion that a daily cable letter service with Australia, be established was receiving the consideration of the PostOffice. ■ .Mr. Hobhouse replied that the matter was one. that primarily concerned the Pacific Cable Board, who at present were nofc prepared to consider the suggestion.
