FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. HASTINGS, June 19,

The Hawke’s Bay' Jockey' Club's winter meeting opened to-day in fine weather. 'Hie course was in good going order and there was a large attendance. Tire totalisator investments amounted to £11,297, compared with £9,128 for the corresponding day last year, being an increase of £2,169. The following are the remaining results :

HAWKE’S BAY HURDLES, two miles.—Koran 1, Stevens 2, Paisano 3. Also started;—Black Northern, Waiputere, Idealism, Elfish and KauroaKoran was never headed and won by ten lengths. Time 3.51.

HAWKE’S BAY STEEPLES. Three miles—Glen more 1, Beeline 2, The Spaniard 3. Also started —Whakaweira, Appin, Winiata and Flamingo. Won by a furlong, the same distance between second and third. Winiata fell. Time 6.40.

W. J>. Young, the rider of Winiata was badly shakenVVHAKATU HURDLES.— Bravest 1, Nescot 2, Master Stead 3. Also ran —St. Toney, Bismarck, Golden .Loop, Merriwa, Moahau, Alma, Waiao. Won bv four lengths. Time 3.19. HUNT CUP STEEPLES.—The Chief 1, Mnrihiko 2, Whehirangi 3. Won easily. HERETAUNGA HANDICAP, seven furlongs.—Thrave .1, Loch Mabin, 2, Pluie 3. Won,by tAvo lengths.
