THE ALPINE MINE

DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER,

A deputation consisting of Messrs Tayloi*, Tansey and Mcllroy waited on the Minister of Mines yesterday on behalf of the shareholders in the Alpine Syndicate. Mr. Taylor said that the company had spent a good deal in exploiting the mine, ami although it had been under a cloud for some time it had produced valuable returns in the past. In order to push on the works it was hoped that the Mines Department would grant them some assistance to develop the* mine. ! Whether the Department rendered any assistance or not they were determined to go on with.the work. If Government assistance was procurable the proposed work could be done more rapidly. The Alpine mine in the past bad played an important part in the district of Lyell. The town had dwindled very much and by helping the syndicate the Department would greatly help the district. Mr Mcllroy endorsed all that Mr. Taylor had said. It was suggested that'the Mines Department should give a subsidy for driving or give a lump sum, Mr. Blow said that the Department was bound down by regulations. Mr. Colvin said that the best thing would be to receive a report. He had’ known the mine from the first and lie believed that it was good for the country to .have the work carried out. The only way was for the syndicate to apply for the Mines Inspector to make a report. - Mr. Taylor asked under what conditions the grant was made to the Just-in-Time Mine, as they would like to make application under similar conditions.

Mr. Colvin said that the Minos Board had reported favourably on the Just-in-Time ” Mine. The conditions under which the grant had been made could not be revealed. : Mr. Taylor thanked the Minister for his courteous reception and the deputation withdrew.
