NEWS FROM MASTERTON

MORE EVIDENCES OF* PROSPERITY. (Wellington ‘‘Post’s” Correspondent.) MASTERTON, November 30. A petition in bankruptcy was filed yesterday by William Pauling, tailor, of this town. During the present month three petitions in bankruptcy have been filed at the D.O.A.’s office here, while for the same, month of 1910 there were no bankruptcies. For the period of eleven months ending to-day there have been 17 petitions filed, compared with 20 for the same period of last year. Notwithstanding this, the Prohibitionists say that No-License promotes commercial prosperity ! The total liabilities of the Masterton bankruptcies were 28 in 1908, £14,325 7s 6d ; 27 in 1909, £11,669 13s lOd ; 24 in 1910, £9922 Os lOd. The figures, taken from a Prohibition advertisement, show that the men who owed most came to bankruptcy first, and the smaller men with more credit were able to hang out the longer; but they, too, succumbed, while others are also coming to grief. The truth is, the record of No-License in Masterton, as elsewhere, is strewn with the bleached bones of the business wrecks of the Prohibition blight—NoLicense. Therefore, ratepayers and business men, save Greymouth from similar disaster by striking out the Bottom Lins on each ballot paper. The following advertisement is appearing in the Masterton papers, it tells its own tale :—• NOTICE. HP HE MISSES BAIN, of the Dominion Restaurant, Masterton, desire to return thanks to their Masterton patrons for their past support, and regret, on account of the depression and loss of business caused by the carrying of No-License ip Masterton, they have been forced to close down their business in Queen Street, which will no longer be open to the public from this date. Dated this 24th day of November, 1911. . VIOLET BAIN;* —A 18.
