NEW SURVEY OF THREE KINGS

THE WORK COMPLETED

BT T2LEQBAPH —PEB PBESS AB9OOIATIOW.]

CHRISTCHURCH, December £

The results of the ocean surveying cruise made by the British Autarkic expedition ship Terra Nova are sh nvn in a large sheet chart of the Three Kings, and the stretch of Water between those islands and the northernmost extremity of New Zealand. The chart .which has been compiled ard plotted by Lieut H. + E. de P. Rennick, R.N.j of the Terra Nova, is a very fine piece of hydrographic work, Some idea of tile laborious nature of the work involved in compiling the chair, may be judged by the fact that ,t has taken nearly two months to complete the sheet. After plotting the original chart, five or six< tracings had to be made, two including an alteration in the scale. Lieut. Rcnnick is a surveyor of high qualifications, ■ and for three years was engaged on the c astal survey work carried out by H. M. S. Penguin between North Cape and Ra.-t Cape,,in the North Island. Tire whole of the sights, bearings, angles observations and soundings , made during the cruise of the Terra Nova had ;o be calculated and worked out with an utmost nicety, to ensure absolute accuracy, without which no chart wifi he accepted by the Hydrographic Deportment of the British Admiralty. The chart, which- was completed yesterday by Lieut. Rennick, gives the correct position of the Throe Kings, which were found by observations and surveys, to have been incorrectly charted pevieusly, the contour of the West ..Is-, land and Great Island being considerably altered on the new chart. Iho whole of the odd 500 soundings taken by tlie Terra Nova, to determine the position of the 100-fathom line, are plotted on the new chart, and show that a deep channel exists between iho line encircling the Three Kings and the lino exteiiding.-uff-shore from West o': Cape Maria Van Diemen round North Capo. The completed, chart is • o he forwarded in charge of Captain 11. E. Greenstrect, of the New Zealand St ipp ing Company’s steamer Remuera, xo the Admiralty authorities in London. The original and several tracings made by Lieut. Rennick in the course of his work will also be sent to London for the purposes of checking and comparison, and also for use in the event of the completed chart being lost. Yesterday afternoon Lieut. Rennick made a large tracing of the chart, to be forwarded to the. Marine Department for use in connection witli Ihe re-hearing of the case of the wreck of the Elingamite, which was lost off West Island, Three Kings, in 1902.
