THE HON. T. M'KENZIE'S TOUR

SPEECH AT WAIAU. BY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Hon T. Mackenzie was welcomed by a large Social gathering at Waiau last night. He said he had no sympathy with the cry that the Ministers were too much in the country and too little in Wellington. The Ministers took their work with them and he was sure they had the support of the people in visiting the country. After reference to the excellence of exhibits at the -Waiau Show Mr Mackenzie said that the apple industry was going to be one of the most important in the country, and when arkets were found in the Mother Land, and the waste lands brought into use the apple raising industry would become a valuable asset.; He then went on to review the meat prospects throughout the world.. Speaking very hopefully of the prospects of the wool trade he said what the country required was men and money in order to have the spare spaces peopled. Britain had surplus population and capital and both Australia and New Zealand should ha,ve a much larger proportion than the surplus. The time was coming when the burden of' the Empire would rest more heavily on the Dominion’s shoulders. A DEPUTATION. On Wednesday a . deputation from the Culverden Railway League waited on the Hon T. Mackenzie urging the necessity for the fourteen mile .extension 'of -' tho railway to Waiau. The interview wan a very lengthy one. The Minister said that the matter was more particularly in the department of the Hon R. McKenzie, but it was a question largely of ways and means. He could make no promises, but would lay the matter before the Cabinet with his favorable impression of the district.
