Melvin, who had hai an engineering, training, was experimenting -with an acetylene gas plant made’’ by himself with a milkcan and" an oil drum, explosion, took place. Terrible injuries were inflicted .on Mr Melvin’s face and he died half amhour later. l ' :l ' V .• SLANDERS REPUDIATED. LEVIN, This Day.— A tribunal, comprising three ministers of religion, two solicitors, and, one civil servant, sat at Otaki last night to investigate'charges against the moral character of-a well known Otaki business man with political aspirations. No accusers came forward. Evidence was given which induced the tribunal to unanimously record that the charges against both parties are absolutely false.
. MAORI GIRL DROWNED. ;’ WAIROA, This Day.—A Maori girl, aged eight years, was drowned ‘ yesterday at Frasertown. The body has not been recovered. THE WEEKLY ’ll ALE-HOLIDAY. * WELLINGTON, This Day.! , To-day a petition, containnig 7169 signatures was presented by the Trades and Labour Council to the Mayor, requesting that a poll be taken to decide the question as to which day in Wellington should be observed as the weekly half-holiday. The promoters of the petition claimed that Saturday was the natural day for the half-holiday, as it would allow better facilities for enjoyment- than Wednesday. ; .
