GREYMOUTH RACES.

' The Grey mouth Jockey Club was favor qd with exceedingly fine weather for its iecond day’s meeting, which was a very interesting one in every respect. There was a fair attendance, the seven events were well contested, and the racing was of an interesting character, several of the finishes being very close. Great credit is I due to the handicappcr for his work throughout the meeting, and everyone appreciated to the full the manner in which Mr Angus Keith got his fields away, as no fault could be found in this respect. King Try proved the winner of the two principal events of the meeting, but on the second day he ran in Mr P. Donnellan s name and under his colors, he having been purchased after the first meeting. of £3478 was put through the total isatoi, limkhm £5531 for the meeting. The race was by in. means utiinlerestiiig but, in the end tlm Vendetta "elding Ka\alii, another three year old, got, home an ease winner. This gave (J. 11. Piper Ins st coiid success of the day .and not. before the turn of fortune's wheel was due. The New Zealand Handicap, the principal harness handicap of the day, w.is next lor decision and the ihiit.eii acceptors ail went to the post. The ago I 1 ’ri nee Imperial gadding Abetfeldy had been reported to do 2.12 during the week and he was at once in stalk'd a very hot favorite while Revenue, Morin and \N altiut- were a little better fancied than the rest. The race pro-,ided something of a surprise, file Almoiil gelding Alliance gelling clear after a mile had been covered and holding his place easily. Ilevenite who was apparently a little short of work pul in a great first mile bul w.as disappointing at the finish and just failed to gel into second place. Aherfeldy finished fifth. Alliance who was it winner at the February meeting over a mile and a half improved considerably on Jiis previous record.

Only four two year olds went out to contest (lie Futurity Stakes for trotters, the withdrawal of the Ashburton owned gelding, Lord Derby, causing some disappointment, ’Litre was little to choose between (he four so far as public fancy was concerned. 'I he race was almost a fiasco. The Woodend-To-morrow lilly To-night wtis tho only one to settle down in the f l lst, half mile and she had a hollow victory, in about the recognised two year old time. The Australian bred Grattiin Chimes showed pace in the last two furlongs but did net sustain her reputation though she had in the sulky a leading American driver, Schoonmaker, who has just come to Canterbury. Mr J. I). Piper paid 280 guineas for the iilly at the Allendale stock farm sale and in spite of her disappointing efforts she looks like the sort that will prove a good investment.

A very hot favorite in St. Swithin got home in tho Presidents Handicap after a great tussle with Lcnapc, a difficult mare, who was nicely handled by her owner the popular veterinary' surgeon Mr J. R. Charlton. Bonification and Emmeline trotted well but the rest of tho field of a dozen made a poor showing. The winner is a handsome three year old colt by Rothschild out. of a well performed mare, Q’uoenV, and belongs to the Ashburton sportsman, Mr H ,F. Nicoll. His time was again ‘a long way better than the mark on which lie was handicapped and Linape ran the race of his life. Another great race was the Autumn Handicap'Hit which Elmwood just got up to win by a neck from Major Roth sea after a tremendous battle. The fast track was again in evidence

and under the circumstances the well known gelding Vaiiclard did well to finish so close, up. Jackaroo, who had been made a strong favorite, got off badly and was last nearly all the way. Dominion, Wild Bill, Lenpre, and Mains were singled out in that order for the Flying Handicap but like Aberfeldy, Dominion appeared to have done his best performance during his training arid lie* faded! blit early. Mains was always well placed and though the staunch old Sacramento —My Mistake mare ran a good race she could not quite reach tho Castaway gelding. The handicapper again had the worst of the deal, Mains clipping seven or eight seconds off his record. The Express Handicap closed a fine day’s sport. Bermuline was made a strong favorite but Major Rothsea got well away and never gave anything a chance while Bessie B put in a great run in the last furlong and beat a bunch for second place. The winner who had registered a good performance in the Autumn Handicap again (lid better time than ho had been given credit for.

(hr TELEC.EAI'H —PER Pit ESS ASSOCIATION.) CANTERBURY- FIRST DAY. CHRISTCHURCH, March 28. The weather conditions were not at all favourable for the opening of the Canterbury J.C. autumn meeting. Heavy rain fell'overnight and there was a thick drizzle all the morning, and during the early part of the afternoon and then clearing off. The attendance was naturally affected and the going was heavy. The tote investments amounted to £13,379. as against £17.853 last year. Ten bookmakers were licensed inside and twenty-three outside. The scratching pen was used freely in . .auiei tion with the Autumn Plate, and -i-M'ii of the eleven acceptors went to the oust. The Multiform colt Guiaiib.rie was selected as the best thing in the race. Genius, who was expected to improve on her Waimate running', was next in demand. His supporters were in luck, ftube soon displaced Kaglestoiie. who had got away smartly, and flniaiifortc. hard ridden, could make no impression on him. The Royal Artillery fillv Rislora put a good run in (he straight, finishing her task better than previous form had led one to expert. The weather was clear for the Great Master Handicap, as at the last moment the son made an effort to shine on the field of fifteen, which were saddled, and the parade attracted a great deal of attention, the horses being brought to the post in a initialkably even condition for so large a field. .Speculation was brisk and there were half-a-dozen very well supported, Kiliiidini being placed at (lie bead of the list with Penates, Passion. Broadsword. Boanerges and Sir Frisco following in that order and Prim as a rank outsider. At the early stages the race promised to be interest mg, as Broadsword moved out smartlv and led the field to the last turn.

with Kilindini and Penates prominent, lint the loader fell and Penates was left with a commanding load. Luckily both Broadsword-and hi§ rider escaped injury. Kilindini did not reproduce his track form, but both Prim and Federal ran quite to expectations, the Pilgrim’s Progress mare finishing in great style and pulling up apparently quite sound, so (hat her prospects for the Great Autumn Handicap must lx' considered very bright. Silkweh imnroved on his recent form by getting into fourth place, , and Gunboat, who was rnniiiim on well at the finish. Tumid and Cronstadt all performed creditably. Sir Frisco gol off badly and was never in the hunt, while Kilindini and Passion, both of whom had been freely supported some time ago, did no! sec the journey out well. The fourteen starters in the Russley Plato did not represent a high class among this season’s two-year olds, hut they made a very good race. The Birkenhead-Eoa filly Selene had been doing better track work than any of tho others, and she was made a strong favorite. Crown Derby and the Waiuku filly Dircctoire wore next in demand. This time the favorite made no mistakes, leading all tho way and winning comfortably from Martino, who was an outside chance, with True Knight next. Tlie Courtenay Welter produced the biggest dividend of the day. A rank outsider in Fisticuff, _ a tremendous three-year-old. by Singlestick 11, getting borne from a field of fifteen. Perle d’Or, a full sister to Golden Slipper, was made a pood favorite, but neither she nor White Cockade, who was next in demand, ram prominently. # The Gimerack Stages provided the best finish of the day, the Seer, who is qtiite a veteran in Beilin nr races lasting just long enough to beat Pretty Nell bv a nose, the Castnshore mare finisbin ■ unite unusually gamely. The Seer was a strong favorite, with Pretty Nell better supported than tho rest. The Sookburn Handicap concluded the day’s sport with another great straggle.

FJitaway lost about eight lengths sit the stfirt and iiftei’ running into second position at the top of the-straight had nothing iff hand. Bridge, who had led a bunch into the straight, was just beaten by a neck, Iranui confirming her recent Dunedin form in a fjne finish. Gwendoiina, who was favorite, was in fourth place, but Ohtiandor, whose . good track work probably installed him as second favorite, was disappointing.
